Greatest Common Factor

In this article, you will learn about what is greatest common factor and how to find the greatest common factor with examples.

What is factor?

Factors are numbers that you multiply together to get another number.

For example, 2 X 9 = 18, so 2 and 9 are factors of 18.

A number can have multiple factors.
For example, factors of 16 are 1, 2, 4, 8, 16.
Because 1 x 16 = 16
2 x 8 = 16
4 x 4 = 16

What is common factor?

If the factors of two or more numbers are similar, it is called common factor.

For example, the common factors of 12, 18, 30.
Factors of 12 are 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, and 12
Factors of 18 are 1, 2, 3, 6, 9, and 18
Factors of 30 are 1, 2, 3, 5, 6, 10, 15, and 30

You can notice that the numbers 1, 2, 3, and 6 are appearing in all of the lists. So, the common factors of 12, 18, and 30 are 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6.

What is the greatest common factor?

Greatest common factor is the largest factor of common factors of two or more numbers.

As you have seen in the previous example, the common factors of 12, 18, and 30 are 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6. So the Greatest Common Factor of 12, 18, and 30 is 6.
