Identifying Quadrilaterals

Today we will learn about what quadrilaterals are, quadrilateral shapes, types of quadrilateral etc. So let's start.

What are Quadrilaterals?

QUADRILATERALS are 2D shapes that are a type of polygon with 4 sides and 4 angles.
The sum of all interior angles of a quadrilateral is 360 degrees.

(QUAD means four, LATERALS means side)

Types of Quadrilaterals

There are SIX basic types of quadrilaterals:

  1. Parallelogram
  2. Rectangle
  3. Rhombus
  4. Square
  5. Trapezoid / Trapezium
  6. Kite

What are polygons?

A polygon is a shape with AT LEAST 3 sides with NO curves and NO open sides.

What does parallel mean?

Parallel means that lines go in the same direction and NEVER intersect/meet together.

What is a parallelogram?

  • Opposite sides are parallel and equal.
  • Opposite angles are equal.
  • Diagonals bisect each other.
Quadrilateral

What is a rectangle?

  • Opposite sides are parallel and equal.
  • All angles are 90º.
  • The diagonals bisect each other.
Quadrilateral

What is a rhombus?

  • All sides are equal and opposite sides are parallel.
  • Opposite angles are equal.
  • The diagonals bisect each other at right angles.
Quadrilateral

What is a square?

  • Opposite sides are parallel and all sides are equal.
  • All angles are 90º.
  • Diagonals bisect each other at right angles.

What is a trapezoid?

A trapezoid is a quadrilateral with EXACTLY ONE PAIR of parallel sides. Sides do NOT have to be equal in length.

Isosceles trapezoid: A trapezoid in which the nonparallel sides (the legs) are congruent.

FUN FACT: Trapezoid defination are different for different people. Some people say that a trapezoid has AT LEAST ONE PAIR of parallel sides instead of EXACTLY ONE PAIR of parallel sides.

What is a kite?

  • Two pairs of adjacent sides are equal.
  • One pair of opposite angles is equal.
  • Diagonals intersect at right angles.
  • The longest diagonal bisects the shortest diagonal into two equal parts.
