Point Lines Line Segments and Rays
Today we will learn about Point Lines Line Segments and Rays, and Types of Line. So let's start.
What is Geometry?
Geometry (geo means “earth,” metron means “measurement”) is one of the oldest branches of mathematics that deals with lines, points, shapes, distance, and angles.
A mathematician who works in the field of geometry is called a geometer.
What is a point?
A point is an exact location or position with no size. It means the point has no width, no length, and no depth.
You can show a point by a dot, i.e., Point A.
What is a line?
A Line is a straight path that extends in opposite directions. A line is a one-dimensional figure, which doesn’t have width. Also, It doesn’t have definite ends in both directions.
There are different types of lines such as vertical lines, horizontal lines, parallel and perpendicular lines.
What is a line segment?
A line segment is part of a line with two endpoints, i.e., a beginning and an ending point.
You can name a line segment using its two endpoints and a symbol without arrows. This line segment is named AB.
What is a ray?
A ray is a part of a line with one endpoint (i.e., starting point) and continues forever in the other direction.
Types of line
There are FOUR types of lines in geometry:
- Horizontal Lines
- Vertical Lines
- Parallel Lines
- Perpendicular Lines
Horizontal Lines
A horizontal line is one that moves from left to right in a straight direction across the page.
Vertical Lines
A vertical line moves from top to bottom in a straight direction across the page.Parallel Lines
Parallel lines are two straight lines that are always the same distance apart. They never meet or intersect at any point, even at infinity.
Perpendicular Lines
When two straight lines meet or intersect at an angle of 90 degrees, they are perpendicular to each other.
