# Identifying Quadrilaterals

#### Today we will learn about what quadrilaterals are, quadrilateral shapes, types of quadrilateral etc. So let's start.

## What are Quadrilaterals?

QUADRILATERALS are **2D shapes** that are a type of polygon with **4 sides and 4 angles.** The sum of all interior angles of a quadrilateral is 360 degrees.

**(QUAD means four, LATERALS means side)**

## Types of Quadrilaterals

There are **SIX** basic types of quadrilaterals:

**Parallelogram****Rectangle****Rhombus****Square****Trapezoid / Trapezium****Kite**

### What are polygons?

A polygon is a shape with **AT LEAST 3 sides** with **NO curves** and **NO open sides**.

### What does parallel mean?

Parallel means that lines go in the same direction and **NEVER** intersect/meet together.

## What is a parallelogram?

- Opposite sides are parallel and equal.
- Opposite angles are equal.
- Diagonals bisect each other.

## What is a rectangle?

- Opposite sides are parallel and equal.
- All angles are 90º.
- The diagonals bisect each other.

## What is a rhombus?

- All sides are equal and opposite sides are parallel.
- Opposite angles are equal.
- The diagonals bisect each other at right angles.

## What is a square?

- Opposite sides are parallel and all sides are equal.
- All angles are 90º.
- Diagonals bisect each other at right angles.

## What is a trapezoid?

A trapezoid is a quadrilateral with **EXACTLY ONE PAIR** of parallel sides. Sides do **NOT** have to be equal in length.

**Isosceles trapezoid:** A trapezoid in which the nonparallel sides (the legs) are congruent.

**FUN FACT**: **Trapezoid defination are different for different people. Some people say that a trapezoid has AT LEAST ONE PAIR of parallel sides instead of EXACTLY ONE PAIR of parallel sides.**

## What is a kite?

- Two pairs of adjacent sides are equal.
- One pair of opposite angles is equal.
- Diagonals intersect at right angles.
- The longest diagonal bisects the shortest diagonal into two equal parts.
