Human Teeth
The arrangement of teeth is expressed by a formula called a dental formula and is expressed in the form of fractions.
Teeth are the strongest part of a human body, which is composed of proteins and minerals. In addition to the digestion, it helps in speech as well. An adult has 32 teeth, which include wisdom teeth as well. Molars are the first permanent teeth to develop, and most of the adults have their complete set of permanent teeth by the age of 21.
Mostly adults have 32 teeth, called permanent and temporary teeth. It can be classified as:
- Eight Incisors: Four incisors in the upper jaw and four in the lower jaw.
- Four Canines: Two canines in the upper jaw and two in the lower jaw.
- Eight premolars: four premolars in the upper jaw and four in the lower jaw.
- Twelve premolars: six molars in the upper jaw and six in the lower jaw. It includes four wisdom teeth.
Babies are born toothless as they take in their mother’s milk as their primary source of food. When babies start to grow, milk teeth grow gradually and start to appear. When a baby turns six, all the temporary teeth are replaced by permanent teeth.
Among the four types of teeth, the lower incisors are the first primary teeth to come in. Mostly kids have there twenty primary teeth by the age of 3, which can be classified as:
- Eight incisors: four incisors in the upper jaw and four in the lower jaw.
- Four canines: two canines in the upper jaw and two in the lower jaw.
- Eight molars: four molars in the upper jaw and four in the lower jaw.
Types of human teeth
Teeth have different shapes and different functions to perform during chewing and finally digestion. They have different positions as well to serve its purpose.
Four types of teeth in humans are:
- Incisors : they are present at the front of mouth, which has sharp edges and cuts the food into small and chewable pieces. It counts a total of eight, four in the upper jaw and four in the lower jaw.
- Canines: they are called cuspids. It’s a sharp, elongated, and pointy surface. It grips and tears the food. It counts a total of four, two in the upper jaw and two in the lower jaw.
- Premolars: they are named as bicuspids and are located behind the canines. It helps in the grinding and crushing of food into smaller particles. It counts a total of eight, two on each side of the jaw.
- Molars: they are the largest and strongest teeth. It helps in grinding the food . It counts a total of twelve, six in the upper jaw and six in the lower jaw. Four of those are wisdom teeth, which is called as third molars, which comes in age of 17 to 25 .
