Photosynthesis for Kids: How Do Plants Make Their Food?

What is Photosynthesis?

Plants don’t eat like people or animals. They make their own food—like tiny green chefs! The process is called photosynthesis.

Let’s break it down:

  • Photo means light (from the sun)
  • Synthesis means putting together

So, photosynthesis means putting things together using light to make food.

What Do Plants Need to Make Food?

To cook their food, plants need just a few simple ingredients:

🌿 IngredientWhere It Comes From
☀️ SunlightFrom the sun
💧 WaterFrom the soil, absorbed by roots
🌬️ Carbon DioxideFrom the air
🍃 ChlorophyllGreen part in leaves that catches sunlight

Chlorophyll is what makes leaves green—and it’s super important for catching sunlight!

How Does Photosynthesis Work? (Step-by-Step)

Here’s how a plant cooks its food in 5 simple steps:

  1. Roots drink water from the soil and send it up the stem to the leaves.
  2. Leaves open tiny holes (called stomata) to take in carbon dioxide from the air.
  3. Sunlight shines on the leaves.
  4. Chlorophyll traps the sunlight and uses it like energy to mix the water and carbon dioxide.
  5. This mix creates a sugar called glucose (plant food) and gives out oxygen as a gift to us!

What Do Plants Make?

  • Glucose—a type of sugar plants use for energy and growing.
  • Oxygen—the fresh air we breathe!

So when plants make food, they help us too. That’s teamwork!

Why Is Photosynthesis Important?

Photosynthesis helps:

  • 🌱 Plants grow big and strong.
  • 🌬️ Make oxygen so we can breathe.
  • 🐛 Feed animals that eat plants.
  • 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Feed people too! (We eat plants and animals that eat plants.)

No photosynthesis = no food and no fresh air!

🎯 Leaf Sunlight Test

You’ll need:

  • A green leaf
  • A small piece of black paper or foil
  • Tape

Steps:

  1. Tape the black paper over part of the leaf.
  2. Leave it in the sun for 2–3 days.
  3. Remove the paper and look at the leaf.

🌿 What happened? The part that didn’t get sunlight won’t look as green—it didn’t do photosynthesis!

Steps of Photosynthesis
  • 1️⃣ Roots take in water
  • 2️⃣ Leaves take in air (CO₂)
  • 3️⃣ Sunlight hits leaves
  • 4️⃣ Chlorophyll uses light to mix air + water
  • 5️⃣ Plant makes food (glucose) + oxygen
What Do Plants Make?
  • 🍬 Glucose – Plant sugar (food)
  • 🌬️ Oxygen – Released into the air for us to breathe
Why Is It Important?
  • 🌱 Helps plants grow
  • 🌬️ Makes oxygen for people and animals
  • 🍎 Gives food to all living things
Key Vocabulary
  • Chlorophyll– Green part that traps sunlight
  • Stomata – Tiny holes in leaves
  • Glucose – Sugar the plant makes
Try This at Home!
  1. 📌 Cover part of a leaf with foil.
  2. 🕒 Leave it in sunlight for 2 days.
  3. 👀 Uncover it – the hidden part won’t turn green!
Quick Quiz
  • Q1: What 3 things do plants need to make food?
  • Q2: What gas do they release?
  • Q3: What is the food they make called?
(Answers: Sunlight, Water, Air – Oxygen – Glucose)

FACT #1. The energy for photosynthesis comes from light.

FACT #2. During photosynthesis, plants use sunlight, water, carbon dioxide to make their food.

FACT #3. Light energy is converted to chemical energy by chlorophyll.

FACT #4. The green color of leaves is due to chlorophyll.

FACT #5. Leaves change color in autumn because plants slow down the process of photosynthesis

FACT #6. Plants perform photosynthesis in organelles called chloroplasts. There are two parts of chloroplasts, i.e., grana and stroma

FACT #7. Only plants do not use photosynthesis. Rather, some bacteria, such as cyanobacteria, and protists, such as algae, are also producers. These single-celled organisms also contain chlorophyll.

FACT #8. All living things on this planet depend on organic molecules synthesized by plants as a result of photosynthesis.
